Bay of Bengal security discussed at Dhaka conference
During the ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026’ in Dhaka, speakers addressed the geopolitical importance and security challenges of the Bay of Bengal region. Experts noted that while external powers possess the capability to create instability in the area, maintaining peace and securing maritime trade routes depends heavily on the vigilance of regional nations, including Bangladesh.
Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, attending the conference organized by the Centre for Governance Studies, emphasized the necessity of cooperation with India for the safety and security of smaller island nations. Nasheed stated that the Maldives relies on India to help maintain peace in the Indian Ocean and South Asia, noting that small nations lack the military resources to ensure their own security independently. He also highlighted the importance of plugging into India’s rapid development to ensure regional prosperity.
