Bay of Islands Airport runway extension enabled by new safety rules

New government runway safety rules are expected to facilitate the extension of the Bay of Islands Airport runway in New Zealand. Associate Transport Minister James Meager announced that new civil aviation rules, effective August 31, will replace existing Runway End Safety Area (RESA) requirements for regional airports with more flexible and cost-effective approaches.

Local leaders, including Far North Mayor Moko Tepania and representatives from the Far North District Council and Far North Holdings Ltd, have welcomed the decision. The previous regulations required regional airports to meet the same safety standards as major hubs, making expansion commercially difficult. The updated rules allow safety measures to be tailored to the specific risk profiles of regional facilities.

The runway extension is intended to accommodate larger ATR aircraft, which could potentially double the airport's current passenger capacity and enable direct flights to Wellington.
