Bayburt weaver preserves traditional ehram heritage
Sevim Ataner, a 60-year-old weaver in Bayburt, is working to preserve the region's traditional ehram weaving heritage. Having learned the craft from her mother at age 12, Ataner noted that the use of this wool fabric declined significantly with technological advancements in the 1990s, at one point leaving her as the sole practitioner in the area.
To revitalize the tradition, Ataner has expanded the application of the registered Bayburt Ehram beyond traditional clothing. By participating in fairs organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, she has developed new products including bags, shawls, scarves, jewelry, and bedspreads.
For the past three years, she has also been producing handmade dolls dressed in ehram fabric, which have become popular souvenirs for visitors. These dolls, priced at 1,200 Turkish Liras, feature various traditional motifs and are designed to promote local culture to tourists.
