Bayelsa Governor Diri pledges security support and seeks military command review

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to maintain peace and protect national assets. During a meeting with senior military officers, including the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army 6 Division, Diri emphasized the importance of synergy between security agencies and the state government.

To improve logistics and coordination, the Governor requested that military authorities reconsider Bayelsa State’s alignment, suggesting a move from the 6th Division in Port Harcourt to the 83rd Division in Benin, Edo State. He also welcomed the proposed establishment of additional army formations and an artillery regiment in several local government areas, including Southern Ijaw, Ekeremor, and Nembe.

In a separate engagement at a book launch for Braeyi Ekiye’s “Redefining Nigeria,” former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Diri advocated for true fiscal federalism. They argued that equitable resource sharing and power distribution are essential for national unity and sustainable development, particularly for the Niger Delta region, which carries a significant portion of the nation’s economic burden.
