Bayelsa Queens appoint Wemimo Matthew as head coach on two-year deal

Bayelsa Queens, the six‑time Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) champions, have confirmed the appointment of Wemimo Matthew as head coach on a two‑year contract ahead of the 2026/27 season. She replaces Whyte Ogbonda, who left after guiding the club to the 2024/25 league title and a runner‑up finish in the 2025/26 campaign.

Matthew joins Bayelsa Queens from Remo Stars Ladies, where she spent three seasons and earned a reputation as a respected tactician. Her previous roles include spells with Sunshine Queens and Edo Queens and service as an assistant coach with Nigeria’s senior women’s team, the Super Falcons, and the U‑20 side, the Falconets. Holding CAF coaching qualifications, she is tasked with sustaining the club’s domestic dominance and restoring its presence on the continental stage.
