Bayerischer Rundfunk faces significant financial deficit

A report from the Bavarian Supreme Audit Office (ORH) warns that Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), Germany's fourth-largest public broadcaster, is facing a severe financial crisis. Projections suggest that the broadcaster's remaining reserves could be entirely depleted by the end of 2028, with a potential deficit exceeding 100 million euros.

The ORH identified several areas of concern, specifically highlighting pension obligations and personnel costs as major financial burdens. While the BR reduced 55 positions between 2021 and 2024, the audit noted that 196 planned positions remained vacant, suggesting a need to re-evaluate staffing requirements. The broadcaster currently manages approximately 3,000 permanent employees and 1,600 fixed freelancers, operating with an annual budget of roughly 1.2 billion euros derived from license fees and advertising.

Additionally, the audit criticized high costs and inefficient structures in specific areas, including foreign correspondents, telemedia, and accessibility services. To mitigate these issues, the Bavarian state parliament is currently discussing a new broadcasting law aimed at increasing cooperation with other broadcasters, such as ARD and ZDF, to reduce costs.
