The Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th-century masterpiece depicting the Norman Conquest of England, has arrived at the British Museum in London for a major exhibition. On loan from France, the 70-meter-long linen artifact is expected to draw between 7 and 7.5 million visitors during its ten-month stay.

Described by curators as ‘an enormous act of diplomacy’, the exhibition is part of a trilateral agreement between the UK, France, and the museum. The tapestry, which illustrates the Battle of Hastings in 1066, features hundreds of characters, animals, and even a depiction of Halley’s Comet.

To ensure the safety of the medieval treasure, the British Museum has implemented specialized conservation and security measures. This includes a custom-designed, highly secure display case that allows the tapestry to lie flat, reducing the physical pressure on the fabric compared to its usual hanging display in Bayeux.
