Bayeux Tapestry competition invites UK schoolchildren to design new section

A new competition titled ‘Beyond The Battle’ has invited primary school children across the UK to design and stitch a missing piece of the nearly 1,000-year-old Bayeux Tapestry. Organized by Art Explora and English Heritage, the initiative tasks Key Stage 2 pupils with creating an original textile work that depicts ‘a better tomorrow’ rather than scenes of war.

The 70-metre-long linen tapestry, which illustrates the Norman Conquest, arrived at the British Museum from France in July. This visit marks the first time the work has returned to the UK since its creation.

Winning classes will receive a fully funded trip to London to view the tapestry and visit the 1066 Battle of Hastings Abbey and Battlefield, or another Norman site managed by English Heritage. The winning entries will also be displayed in a special exhibition.
