Bayeux Tapestry returns to UK for historic British Museum exhibition
King Charles III, Queen Camilla, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham gathered at the British Museum for a private viewing of the Bayeux Tapestry. The 70-metre medieval embroidery, which depicts the Norman conquest of England in 1066, is on loan from France for a ten-month exhibition.
This historic loan, which marks the first time the tapestry has been in the United Kingdom in nearly 1,000 years, is viewed as a significant symbol of strengthened Anglo-French relations. The artwork, insured for 960 million euros, will be displayed horizontally in high-tech cases to protect its delicate fibers. The exhibition is scheduled to open to the public on September 10, 2026, and is expected to run until July 2027.
In addition to the cultural exchange, the visit serves as a diplomatic backdrop for meetings between President Macron and Prime Minister Burnham. The tapestry's return follows a high-security transport operation from France earlier this summer.
