Bayeux Tapestry exhibition draws massive crowds at British Museum

The Bayeux Tapestry exhibition has opened at the British Museum in London, drawing massive public interest. The 11th-century masterpiece, which depicts the Norman conquest of England, has seen overwhelming demand, with 100,000 tickets requested within the first 24 hours. Online queues for tickets reportedly reached up to nine hours at peak times, and the exhibition is currently fully booked through the end of the year.

The exhibition was inaugurated by figures including President Emmanuel Macron, King Charles III, and Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The fragile 68-meter-long embroidery is being displayed flat in semi-darkness to ensure its preservation. It will remain on view at the museum until July 11, 2027.

George Osborne, Chair of the British Museum, has used the success of bringing the tapestry to the UK as a metaphor for political recovery, suggesting that the economic challenges following Brexit can be addressed similarly to how the tapestry was successfully relocated and displayed.
