Bayeux Tapestry to receive new display format in Normandy
The 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry will undergo a significant change in presentation when it returns to Normandy following a 10-month loan to London. Instead of its traditional vertical suspension used since the 1980s, the 220-foot-long textile will be displayed on a slanted table, mirroring its current exhibition at the British Museum.
France’s Minister of Culture, Catherine Pégard, stated that the decision to change the display method has been under consideration for approximately a decade and is intended to better preserve the artifact while improving the visitor experience. She clarified that the shift is not a response to any damage sustained during transport to the United Kingdom.
The Bayeux Museum is currently undergoing renovations and is scheduled to reopen in October 2027. The tapestry is expected to remain on view in London until July 11, 2027.
