Baylor University sues former player Sean Thompkins over NIL buyout
Baylor University has filed a lawsuit against former offensive lineman Sean Thompkins, alleging a breach of a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) buyout agreement. The university claims Thompkins owes $85,000, plus interest, attorney fees, and court costs, following his failure to adhere to a mediated settlement reached in May 2026.
The dispute stems from the termination of Thompkins’ NIL contract, which was originally set to run through June 30, 2027. According to the complaint, the agreement was terminated after Thompkins entered the NCAA transfer portal on January 1. Thompkins, who transferred to LSU, had previously agreed to a payment schedule that included an initial $50,000 payment due by August 10, followed by three subsequent installments.
The lawsuit was filed in the 170th State District Court in Texas. While Baylor’s attorney and a university spokeswoman declined to comment, the filing indicates that Thompkins was expected to instruct LSU or Playfly Sports to direct payments to Baylor Athletics.
