Bayreuth Wagner Festival AI Staging Draws Boos

An artificial‑intelligence‑driven visual staging was used for the first time at the Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival during the Saturday evening performance of Götterdämmerung. Curator Marcus Lobbes and his team projected a constantly shifting collage of images, including former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the World Trade Center towers after the September 11 attacks, and a stamp marking German reunification. The experimental imagery confused many spectators, who responded with boos and whistles, while the singers and orchestra received warm applause, especially conductor Christian Thielemann.

The festival, marking the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s Ring cycle, said the AI served as an “image‑generating force” rather than a character, aiming to make each performance unique. Two further productions are scheduled despite the mixed audience reaction.
