Bayreuth Festival AI Visuals Spark Audience Booing

At the Bayreuth Festival’s 150th anniversary, the final opera of Wagner’s Ring cycle, Götterdämmerung, featured stage projections created by artificial intelligence. Curator Marcus Lobbes and his team from the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund supplied a selection of images, which the AI combined into a collage that included historic figures such as former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the Twin Towers after 9/11, and a German reunification stamp.

The AI‑generated visuals received a hostile response from the audience, who booed and whistled when the production team entered the stage. While the picture‑show was criticised for lacking direction, the musical performance under conductor Christian Thielemann and the singers were applauded.

The experiment sparked a debate about the role of AI in opera staging, with commentators noting the novelty of the approach but questioning its artistic legitimacy.
