Bayreuth Festival Orchestra performs Wagner in Madrid
The Bayreuth Festival Orchestra performed selections from Richard Wagner’s tetralogy, ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’, at the Teatro Real in Madrid. This performance was part of a historic Spanish tour that included stops in Barcelona, San Sebastián, Santander, Sevilla, and Valencia, marking the 150th anniversary of the premiere of the Ring cycle and the anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival itself.
Directed by Pablo Heras-Casado, the program featured nine fragments from the cycle, including five vocal pieces. The performance featured prominent Wagnerian singers Catherine Foster as Brünnhilde, Klaus Florian Vogt as Siegmund and Siegfried, and Nicholas Brownlee as Wotan. The concert format required a strategic selection of musical excerpts to maintain continuity and narrative sense without the full theatrical production.
