Bayreuth Festival Stages Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer on July 29, 2026
The Bayreuth Festival presented Richard Wagner’s opera Der fliegende Holländer at the Festspielhaus on 29 July 2026. The production was staged by Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov, with set designs also by him, costumes by Elena Zaytseva and lighting by Gleb Filshtinsky. Oksana Lyniv conducted the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, while the cast featured Nicholas Brownlee as the Dutchman, Nadine Weissmann as Mary, Mika Kares as Daland, Elisabeth Teige as Senta, and Kieran Carrel as the Steersman.
The revival, noted for its psychologically intensified interpretation and new staging elements, has been described as a possible final appearance of this work at Bayreuth, as it is not scheduled for the next season. Critics highlighted the production’s stark visual language and the director’s reworking of the libretto’s emotional core, while acknowledging the strong performances of the principal singers.
