Bayreuth installs new free drinking fountain in Wilhelminenaue

The city of Bayreuth has opened a new barrier‑free drinking water fountain in the Wilhelminenaue park, positioned between the cultural kiosk and the volleyball courts. It provides free tap water for walkers, joggers and sports participants and is the fifth permanent public fountain in the municipality.

The installation was financed through a special funding programme of the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment, with installation costs partially covered by a donation from British American Tobacco (BAT). Mayor Dr. Andreas Zippel highlighted the fountain as part of the city’s response to rising summer temperatures, alongside measures such as greening, shading and de‑paving. Water quality is regularly monitored and an automatic flushing system prevents microbial growth. Additional fountains are planned for high‑traffic locations in the coming years, with further federal and state funds already secured.
