Bayreuth-Nuremberg rail service faces delays after reopening

Following the reopening of the rail connection between Bayreuth and Nuremberg, passengers have reported significant delays and cancellations. A survey conducted by the Bayreuther Tagblatt indicates that over 70 percent of respondents expressed a preference for the previous bus replacement service due to these reliability issues.

The rail line was closed for nearly a year after Deutsche Bahn had to suspend service due to damage to several bridges in the Pegnitz Valley. While 18 bridges have been repaired, fundamental renovations are scheduled to begin in 2029 and are expected to last approximately four years. Additionally, the Pegnitz main station is slated for modernization in the first quarter of 2027.

In light of these ongoing challenges, experts from politics, the rail industry, and passenger associations are meeting in Bayreuth to discuss the future of the Franken-Sachsen-Magistrale. The discussion will focus on critical issues such as electrification, capacity limits, and the long travel times that currently hinder the route's potential for both passenger and freight transport.
