Bayreuth Festival celebrates 150 years with Beethoven opening and first staging of Wagner's 'Rienzi

The Bayreuth Festival marked its 150th anniversary in July 2026. The opening ceremony featured Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, performed by the festival orchestra under Christian Thielemann, echoing the work’s historic role at the 1872 inauguration of the Festspielhaus.

A host of high‑profile German politicians attended, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz, former Chancellor Angela Merkel, Bavarian Minister‑President Markus Söder, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Research Minister Dorothee Bär and others. Festival director Katharina Wagner, who briefly hospitalised herself with an appendicitis, addressed the crowd via a virtual press conference.

For the first time in its history the early Wagner opera Rienzi was staged in the Festspielhaus, directed by Alexandra Szemerédy and Magdolna Parditka, making the production both a musical and political statement. The programme included remembrance events for Jewish musicians persecuted under the Nazis, and a speech by journalist Michel Friedman. The festival also featured an open‑air concert in the Festspielhaus gardens that attracted around 12 000 attendees.

The celebrations blended tradition with controversy, confronting the festival’s Nazi‑era legacy while showcasing new artistic initiatives such as AI‑assisted productions and a documentary on the Ring Cycle.
