Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet marks 30th anniversary
Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet celebrates its 30th anniversary. Released in 1996, the film reimagined the classic tragedy by transplanting the story from medieval Verona to a contemporary urban setting characterized by gang rivalries.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, the production utilized locations in Mexico, including Mexico City and Veracruz, to create its vibrant, maximalist aesthetic. While the film retained Shakespeare’s original Elizabethan verse, it integrated modern elements such as car chases, hip-hop influence, and a fast-paced visual style.
Despite initial criticism regarding its loud visual style, the film was a commercial success, grossing over 147 million dollars against a 14.5 million dollar budget. It has since been recognized as a significant cultural tool for making Shakespeare accessible to younger generations and students.
