Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet to embark on global concert tour

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film ‘Romeo + Juliet’, a global live-to-film concert tour has been announced. The production, titled ‘William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert’, will feature the original movie playing on a large screen while a hybrid musical ensemble performs the score and soundtrack live in synchronization with the action.

The musical performance will blend rock and orchestral musicians with vocalists, electronics, and a DJ to recreate the film’s signature genre-blurring sound. The tour is set to premiere at the Sydney Opera House on September 29, followed by dates in Australia, including Melbourne’s Palais Theatre in May 2027, and various locations in Brisbane and Perth. The tour will also expand to the United States, with performances starting in Pennsylvania in early January.

Originally starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, the film is noted for its maximalist style and iconic 1990s soundtrack, featuring artists such as Des’ree, The Cardigans, Radiohead, and Garbage.
