ÖBB to upgrade avalanche and rockfall protection on Arlberg Railway
ÖBB is modernizing and expanding avalanche and rockfall protection systems along the Arlberg Railway in the Klostertal region, specifically between Wald am Arlberg and Dalaas. The project aims to replace existing structures that no longer meet current technical standards with new avalanche dams, rockfall nets, cable barriers, and snow nets.
In collaboration with the municipality of Dalaas, the project will utilize material from a local sediment basin to construct a 12-meter-high green earth wall. This partnership is intended to reduce transport needs and minimize the environmental impact on the community.
Construction is scheduled to continue until December 2028. While ÖBB states that train services will remain unaffected, residents should expect increased delivery traffic, noise, dust, and periodic helicopter operations to transport materials to difficult-to-reach slopes. A traffic concept has been established to regulate heavy vehicle movement, particularly near local kindergartens.
