BBB party faces wave of resignations as members defect to other parties

In recent weeks several members of the Dutch agrarian party BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) have left their provincial posts or switched allegiance. Statenleden John Huizing continues as the sole BBB representative in Limburg, while René Franssen has joined the right‑wing Forum for Democracy. In Flevoland, Alfons Remery surrendered his seat, citing a too narrow party line. Additionally, Mariëtte van Leeuwen resigned from the BBB provincial council to become a municipal councillor in The Hague, and three other BBB members in South Holland have taken local executive roles, with two immediately ending their provincial activities.

The departures come after BBB’s rapid rise in March 2023, when the party became the largest in the Netherlands following the parliamentary breakthrough of party leader Caroline van der Plas. The current exodus highlights internal disagreements over the party’s direction and threatens its influence in regional assemblies.
