BBC accused of misidentifying 53 militants as journalists in Gaza

The BBC is facing accusations of inaccuracy and bias following an investigation by The Telegraph, which claims the broadcaster identified 53 individuals as journalists killed in the Gaza war who actually had ties to militant groups. These groups include Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

According to the report, some of these individuals were allegedly involved in the October 7, 2023, attacks against Israel, while others appeared in media wearing military uniforms or carrying weapons. While the majority of these names appeared on BBC Arabic’s list of media professionals killed in the conflict, ten were also featured on the BBC News English site.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has already removed 12 individuals from its own list, concluding they were not media workers or were directly involved in combat. For example, Abdullah Darwish, listed by BBC Arabic as a camera operator, was removed after reports surfaced of his participation in the October 7 attacks with the Al-Qassam Brigades.

British political figures and former BBC executives have criticized the broadcaster, citing a persistent issue with impartiality and accountability. The BBC has announced it will review the cases identified in the investigation.
