BBC and Channel 4 discuss potential operational tie-up

The BBC and Channel 4 have held preliminary discussions with the UK government regarding a potential operational tie-up aimed at reducing costs and competing with major global streaming platforms.

One proposed model involves merging Channel 4’s advertising operations, its streaming services, and specific channels such as E4 and Film4 with UKTV, the BBC’s commercial subsidiary. This new entity could be equally owned by both broadcasters. While the main Channel 4 broadcast channel would not be part of the merged entity, it could potentially receive financial benefits from the arrangement.

This collaboration would represent a more significant integration than previous discussions regarding hosting Channel 4 content on BBC iPlayer. Negotiations may intensify in the coming year as the BBC works toward a new funding model with the government. Both broadcasters have expressed support for increased collaboration between public service media to improve sustainability and innovation in a competitive market.
