The story follows a secret British government department that gathers ‘expats’—historical figures rescued from certain death—to test the viability of time travel. Her first assignment is Commander Graham Gore, a Victorian polar explorer portrayed by Billy Howle.

Joining the lead actors are Hong Chau, Adeel Akhtar, Tamara Lawrance, Emily Fairn, Josh Finan, Aisling Loftus, Tawfeek Barhom, Pérez Biscayart, Ciarán Hinds, and Hélène Patarot. The series is being adapted for television by writer Alice Birch.
