BBC announces job cuts and digital-first transition

The BBC is implementing significant workforce reductions and structural changes to address revenue pressures and a shifting media landscape. The broadcaster is cutting 110 jobs from its BBC Media Tech division, which manages platforms such as iPlayer and BBC Sounds. An additional 35 vacancies will remain unfilled, and the corporation expects to cut another 180 roles through buyout packages. Executives have warned that further cuts may occur over the next two years, aiming for total savings of over £100 million.

Director General Matt Brittin indicated that the broadcaster is moving toward a digital-first model. This transition may involve closing certain terrestrial TV channels or radio stations, or moving them to online-only formats like iPlayer. Brittin noted that while some services may have low broadcast viewership, they may maintain high engagement via digital platforms.

To manage costs and modernize operations, the BBC plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology to replace some roles. While the corporation intends to experiment with AI to understand its capabilities, leadership emphasized that the technology is not a replacement for human creativity.
