BBC cancels bespoke studio plans for The Archers in Birmingham

The BBC has cancelled plans to build a dedicated recording studio for the long-running Radio 4 drama ‘The Archers’ in Birmingham’s Digbeth area. The decision is part of a broader cost-cutting initiative aimed at delivering significant savings.

While the production team is still scheduled to move to the Tea Factory hub in Digbeth in early 2028, the bespoke facility will no longer be constructed. The broadcaster is currently evaluating existing studio facilities across the UK and other external options within the West Midlands to determine the show’s future recording location.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker has expressed opposition to the scaling back of the Birmingham production. The BBC stated that it is assessing the impact on the cast and emphasized that no final decision regarding the permanent recording location has been made.
