BBC commissions two-part docuseries on J. K. Rowling

The BBC has commissioned a two-part docuseries titled ‘J. K. Rowling’ to explore the life and legacy of the Harry Potter author. Produced by Rogan Scotland, the series is scheduled for release in 2027 on BBC Two, BBC Scotland, and BBC iPlayer, with international distribution managed by BBC Studios.

The documentary will be structured into two distinct segments. The first episode will trace Rowling’s rise from a struggling single mother in Edinburgh to the creator of a global literary and entertainment phenomenon. It will examine the cultural impact of the Harry Potter franchise, which has expanded into film, theme parks, and massive merchandising empires.

The second episode will focus on Rowling’s evolution into a highly polarizing public figure. It will address her involvement in intense social and political debates, including her views on gender identity, feminism, Scottish independence, and free speech. The series aims to use her life as a lens to examine three decades of social, political, and technological change in the United Kingdom.

Rowling will not participate directly in the production. Instead, the series will rely on archival footage, her written works, and interviews with individuals who have worked closely with her. The project arrives as the franchise prepares for a new television adaptation by HBO.
