BBC executives receive significant pay rises amid funding uncertainty

A record 130 BBC executives now earn more than £178,000 annually, according to recent findings. Total earnings for executives above this threshold rose to £31 million last year, up from £15.4 million in 2022/23.

While rank-and-file staff were offered pay increases of just 1.5 per cent, 61 executives received five-figure raises that exceeded the rate of inflation. Notable increases include Chief Content Officer Kate Phillips, whose pay rose from £314,999 to a potential £459,999, and Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski, who received an additional £60,000.

These pay rises occur as the broadcaster faces scrutiny over its funding model. The number of licence fee payers fell by 539,000 last year, the steepest annual decline since the pandemic, leaving 23.3 million households funding the corporation. As the BBC’s Royal Charter comes up for renewal in December, ministers are considering alternatives to the current £180 licence fee, such as a household levy, a subscription system, or advertising-based funding.
