BBC faces criticism over ‘mostly peaceful’ description of French riots

The BBC is facing criticism for describing recent violent unrest in France as ‘mostly peaceful’ during a report by Paris correspondent James Waterhouse. While the report included footage of rioters setting vehicles on fire and attacking police, the characterization drew backlash from viewers and political figures.

Waterhouse suggested the violence was driven by an ‘opportunistic minority’ who arrived to cause carnage. However, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez contradicted this, stating that the violence erupted ‘right from the beginning’ of the demonstrations, rather than emerging later in the protests.

The unrest resulted in significant destruction, including the near-total destruction of the 143-year-old City Hall in Limoges and the looting of over 3,000 businesses. Official figures indicate at least 2,400 arrests were made and more than 1,000 police officers and firefighters were injured.
