BBC faces major funding crisis amid inflation and real-terms cuts
The BBC is facing a significant funding crisis ahead of its charter renewal in January 2028. The corporation must manage hyper-inflation across programming genres while maintaining traditional broadcast networks until at least 2034, alongside the need to invest in digital services to attract younger audiences.
A primary driver of the crisis is the reduction in real-terms funding for national, regional, and local UK services. While licence fee income rose from £3.1 billion in 2010-11 to £3.9 billion by 2025-26, several factors have diminished the net value. Government support for free licences for those over 75 has been phased out, and “top-slicing” (the diversion of funds) to support the BBC World Service, BBC Monitoring, and the Local Democracy Reporting Service has increased to £293 million.
When accounting for a cumulative inflation rate of 55.4% between 2010 and 2025, the real-terms impact is a significant drop in income for UK services, estimated at a 37% decrease.
