BBC launches 'Ann Droid' sitcom starring Diane Morgan and Sue Johnston

The BBC has introduced a new comedy series called Ann Droid, set in the near‑future year 2029. The plot follows a widowed pensioner, played by Sue Johnston, whose son buys a second‑hand elder‑care android – a robot named Linda (performed by Diane Morgan) – to look after her. The series explores the uneasy friendship that develops between the elderly woman and the reconditioned robot, blending humour with the melancholy of ageing.

Created by Diane Morgan and comedian Sarah Kendall, the show also features Paul Ready as the son Michael, Andrea Valls, Sarah Kendall in a cameo, and a supporting cast that includes Margaret Leicester and Michelle Greenidge. The premise has been described as “a son abandons his elderly mother after she has had a fall, and orders a superannuated robot carer to look after her.” The programme aims to combine contemporary anxieties about robotics and caregiving with typical BBC sitcom sensibilities.
