BBC launches production tender for Doctor Who reboot

The BBC has officially launched a tender process to find a new production team for the science fiction franchise ‘Doctor Who’, with a target return date of 2028 or 2029. This move follows a period of significant transition, including the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies and the end of the co-production agreement with Disney.

The BBC is seeking a fresh creative vision that remains ‘relevant, surprising, bold and inspiring’ for both long-term fans and new audiences. The tender allows for creative flexibility regarding narrative structure, whether through continuous storylines or standalone episodes. Proposals must include at least one companion character and be capable of spanning historical eras, distant futures, alien worlds, and contemporary Earth.

Key milestones in the process include a submission deadline of October 2, 2026, with discussions with selected applicants planned for January 2027. The production contract is expected to be awarded in March 2027. While third-party financing is permitted, BBC Studios will retain responsibility for distribution, licensing, and digital offerings.
