BBC Newsnight faces potential cancellation amid £500m savings drive

Staff at the BBC are concerned that the long-running current affairs programme Newsnight could be cancelled by the end of next year. The potential axing of the show, which has aired for 46 years, is reportedly part of a broader effort by the broadcaster to achieve £500 million in savings over the next three years.

Reports suggest the BBC is shifting its focus toward short, shareable social media clips and its iPlayer on-demand service. This strategic pivot may prioritize different news formats over traditional flagship programmes. Newsnight has already seen significant changes, including a reduction in staff from 57 to 23 following the removal of its special investigations unit and a merger of its production with Laura Kuenssberg’s Sunday show.

The BBC has not confirmed any decision to end the programme, noting that its audience has increased following a recent reformat. However, the corporation continues to implement cost-cutting measures, having already cut more than 500 jobs as part of its wider savings programme.
