BBC Newsnight moves Friday programme to new 7pm slot

The BBC is moving the Friday edition of its flagship news and current affairs programme, Newsnight, to a new prime-time slot. Starting Friday, September 18, the Friday programme will air at 7:00 pm on BBC Two.

Matt Chorley, who joined the team in 2025, will host the Friday evening broadcasts. The Monday through Thursday editions will maintain their existing 10:30 pm time slot.

Following a format refresh in 2024, the programme has seen significant growth in viewership. The BBC reports that average viewership has increased by 11% year-on-year and 22% compared to levels prior to the refresh. Digital engagement has also risen, with substantial growth noted on BBC iPlayer and various social media platforms.
