BBC One ends DIY SOS series after 27 years

BBC One has decided to end the long-running television series DIY SOS after 27 years. The programme, which first aired in October 1999, has become well known for its ‘Big Build’ format, where presenter Nick Knowles coordinates tradespeople and volunteers to transform homes and community spaces for families and charities facing significant hardships.

The broadcaster stated that the series is being “rested” due to “savings challenges” as part of broader cost-cutting measures. The decision has reportedly caused distress among the show’s staff and host Nick Knowles. Over its nearly three-decade history, the programme has completed major projects, including the construction of a £1 million children’s cancer unit in 12 days.
