BBC pauses civil service secondment scheme amid impartiality concerns
The BBC has paused its secondment scheme for government statisticians following allegations that civil servants breached impartiality guidelines. Reports indicated that officials from various departments, including the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice, were tasked with writing articles and fact-checking sensitive topics such as migration statistics and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Critics raised concerns that these taxpayer-funded officials may have influenced news coverage to align with government positions, noting that their work appeared under bylines for ‘BBC News’ and ‘BBC Verify’ without disclosing their government employment. One civil servant’s blog post claimed to have drafted copy for the news website, a claim the BBC has disputed, stating that while statistical explanations may be incorporated into journalism, the statisticians do not write copy or make editorial decisions.
The BBC stated it is reviewing the roles and has paused current recruitment for the 2027 cycle. A spokesperson emphasized that the corporation ‘takes independence and transparency incredibly seriously’ and maintained that all editorial decisions remain the responsibility of BBC journalists and editors.
