Donald Trump faces potential sanctions in BBC defamation lawsuit
A federal magistrate judge has threatened to levy sanctions against Donald Trump for failing to participate in his own $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The court issued an order directing Trump to file a response regarding his deposition by October 22, noting that previous admonishments regarding his lack of participation have been ineffective.
The legal dispute stems from a BBC documentary titled ‘Trump: A Second Chance,’ which Trump alleges used deceptively edited footage of his January 6, 2021, speech to falsely suggest he was inciting violence. While the BBC admitted to selectively using clips and apologized, it denies the content constitutes defamation.
The BBC has requested that the court compel Trump to sit for a deposition, noting that after eight months of discovery and seven witnesses testified, the key plaintiff has yet to be interviewed. Trump’s legal team initially agreed to a deposition date in mid-October but later claimed he would be unavailable due to ‘other matters of national importance,’ suggesting he would not be available until January 2027 at the earliest.
In a related ruling, Magistrate Judge Enjolique A. Lett confirmed the BBC may serve subpoenas on Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner to gather evidence regarding the speech in question.
