BBC to close BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra

The BBC has announced it will cease linear broadcasting for BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra by spring 2027. This decision is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy aimed at achieving £500 million in savings by 2028 to address sustained financial pressures and changing consumer habits.

While linear services will end, content will transition to digital platforms. BBC Three programming will be available on BBC iPlayer and YouTube, while BBC Scotland will remain on iPlayer with some content appearing on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. Radio 4 Extra programming will move to the BBC Sounds app.

The restructuring is expected to result in significant job losses, with the broadcaster projecting a reduction of between 1,800 and 2,000 positions, approximately 10% of its workforce. Additionally, the BBC News division expects to cut around 100 roles as part of its own savings targets.
