BBC's Call the Midwife Christmas Special 'Sisters in Arms' Completes Filming

The BBC has announced that filming has wrapped on the three‑part Christmas special Call the Midwife: Sisters in Arms. Set in Poplar in September 1939 as World War II begins, the prequel follows the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House confronting the Blitz, evacuations and wartime hardships.

The cast revealed for the first time includes Julie Hesmondhalgh, Helena Wilson, Ellie McKay, Liv Andrusier and Lizzie Back. Writer and showrunner Heidi Thomas said the story’s evacuation of children and fear of missing Christmas “brought us to tears”. Produced by Neal Street Productions for the BBC, the special will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One during the Christmas season, though an exact broadcast date has not yet been set.
