BBVA restructures into retail and wholesale divisions

BBVA has implemented a significant structural reorganization, effectively splitting its operations into two distinct divisions: retail banking and wholesale banking (CIB). Under this new model, Onur Genç will lead the retail division with CEO status, while Javier Rodríguez Soler will head the CIB division, which encompasses investment, corporate, and some wealth management activities.

This internal restructuring follows a period of leadership shifts within the bank. While Genç remains the primary executive, the creation of a dual-structure highlights the growing influence of Rodríguez Soler, who has overseen strong results for the CIB division.

Simultaneously, BBVA has reported a substantial increase in its Spanish assets, which grew by 5,000 million euros during the second quarter of 2026. This growth, driven by accounting adjustments in its Spanish subsidiary and updated trading portfolio values, narrows the gap between BBVA and its domestic competitors, Santander and CaixaBank. While CaixaBank remains the leader in assets within the Spanish domestic market, the competition for the second position is intensifying.
