B.C. Attorney General expresses hope for DRIPA amendments

British Columbia Attorney General Niki Sharma expressed hope for finding a path forward regarding amendments to the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), though she declined to commit to specific changes this fall. Speaking at the Union of B.C. Municipalities meeting in Vancouver, Sharma noted that the government has been making progress through consultations with various First Nations leaders.

Premier David Eby previously postponed amending the law until the fall legislative session after failing to secure sufficient votes for changes earlier this spring. During the UBCM conference, local government representatives expressed concerns regarding their level of involvement in shaping policies that directly impact them. Some critics have called for the law to be repealed, citing potential legal uncertainty and concerns over resource permit approvals and legislative control.
