BC calls on spring hikers to stop invasive species spread

In May, the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia (ISCBC) launched Invasive Species Action Month to curb the spread of invasive plants and animals as outdoor activity rises in the West Kootenay region. The campaign urges participants to take simple daily actions such as cleaning gear, choosing non‑invasive plants for gardens, and reporting sightings.

The month‑long effort includes weekly themes, webinars, and local stewardship events, and invites the public to sign an online pledge at bcinvasives.ca/ISAM2026. ISCBC executive director Gail Wallin emphasized that “the places we enjoy every day, from local trails to backyard gardens, are all connected, and invasive species move through those same spaces.”
