BC Communities Break Daily Heat Records Amid Wildfire Smoke

Lytton, British Columbia, recorded a temperature of 41.2 °C on Wednesday, surpassing its own all‑time daily high of 40.8 °C set in 2021. The heat surge was part of a broader pattern, with interior and coastal communities such as Cache Creek, Osoyoos, Abbotsford, Duncan, Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach also setting new daily temperature records.

Environment Canada issued heat warnings for southern BC and yellow air‑quality alerts for several areas because smoke from more than 80 active wildfires lingered in the atmosphere. Officials expect a gradual cooling trend by the weekend, with temperatures forecast to fall to around 25 °C.

The extreme heat and lingering smoke have raised health concerns across the province, prompting public advisories on staying hydrated and limiting outdoor exposure.
