BC Conservatives face caucus instability as multiple MLAs defect

The British Columbia Conservative Party is facing significant internal instability following the departure of several legislators. In the past three weeks, nine MLAs have left the official Opposition caucus, including Á’a:líya Warbus, a prominent Indigenous leader from the Sto:lo Nation. Warbus stated that the party is being consumed by “culture wars” and internal drama, causing it to abandon key voter issues such as housing affordability, education, and senior care.

Other recent departures include Scott McInnis and Donegal Wilson, who cited ethical concerns and the leadership of Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Premier David Eby of the NDP stated that his party will not attempt to recruit these defectors, noting a “fairly significant gap” between NDP positions and those of the Conservatives on issues ranging from the Human Rights Act to Canada’s relationship with the United States.

Findlay, who won the Conservative leadership in May, is scheduled to run in a byelection in the Abbotsford-Mission riding later this month.
