British Columbia election: Parties pledge transit, healthcare, and infrastructure changes
As the British Columbia provincial election approaches, major political parties have released key campaign pledges regarding infrastructure, healthcare, and social services.
BC NDP leader David Eby has promised to eliminate the $45 bus pass fee for low-income seniors and has pledged $250 million to fund Bus Rapid Transit between Surrey and White Rock. The NDP also proposes a Surrey Charter to grant the city greater municipal autonomy and plans to invest up to $90 million to open 75 involuntary care spaces at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver by 2028.
BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson has proposed scrapping the current eight-lane Massey Tunnel replacement project in favor of a 10-lane George Massey Bridge, which the party estimates would cost $6 billion and take five years to complete. The Conservatives claim the savings from this shift would fund a new women and children’s hospital in Surrey, while also pledging to complete the ongoing Surrey Hospital in Cloverdale.
Meanwhile, the BC Greens have introduced a labor plan that includes increasing the minimum wage annually by one per cent above inflation to match the living wage.
