BC Coroners Service launches inquest into Abbotsford inmate death

The BC Coroners Service has announced an official inquest into the 2021 death of Kendal Lee Campeau, an inmate at the Pacific Institution in Abbotsford. Campeau, a 31-year-old member of the Yellow Quill First Nation, died on November 14, 2021, following what Prisoners’ Legal Services identified as a methadone overdose.

At the time of his death, Campeau was serving a seven-year sentence. He had previously been transferred to the Abbotsford facility after an assault at another prison in 2019. The inquest is scheduled to commence on September 28 at the Burnaby Coroners’ Court to examine the circumstances of the incident.

Provincial authorities noted that such inquiries are typically initiated when a death may result from dangerous practices or could potentially lead to similar fatalities without intervention.
