BC Coroners Service schedules inquest into death of Chase de Balinhard

The BC Coroners Service has announced that an inquest into the death of 15-year-old Chase de Balinhard will begin on November 9, 2026, at the Burnaby Coroners’ Court. The proceedings, presided over by coroner John Knox, aim to determine the facts surrounding the death, including how, when, and where it occurred.

The death followed events involving members of the Surrey Police Service and the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory for deaths occurring while a person is in the custody of a peace officer. The inquest is a non-fault-finding inquiry intended to make recommendations to prevent similar future occurrences.

The proceedings will be livestreamed for public and media access, though the reproduction or broadcasting of the inquest is prohibited.
