B.C. Green Leader Emily Lowan to run in Saanich North and the Islands
B.C. Green Party Leader Emily Lowan has announced she will run in the Saanich North and the Islands riding during the upcoming provincial election. She succeeds incumbent Rob Botterell, who confirmed he will not seek re-election. Botterell stated his decision was a personal choice to serve only one term and was not the result of pressure from party leadership.
Both Lowan and Botterell criticized Premier David Eby for calling an early election. Botterell described the decision to call the vote two years into a four-year term as ‘irresponsible’ and ‘reckless.’ Meanwhile, Green MLA Jeremy Valeriote confirmed he intends to run again in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky.
As preparations for the October 24 election continue, Elections BC chief electoral officer Shipra Verma noted the agency may need to hire 17,000 staff to maintain service levels. The previous election in 2024 cost $91 million.
